Harold Dean Young
Harold Dean Young, the first-born of Wayne and Olive Young, entered this world on September 14, 1941 in Shannon County Missouri. Other than a few years in his early childhood when the family lived in various places during Wayne’s service in the Army and briefly in California, he spent his entire life near the area he was born. As he would reflect, he was proud of the fact that he had lived and worked and built a life within a few miles of where he was born. We often laughed at how much he disliked leaving the farm or Summersville. From a young age he had a deep love of farming. During his high school years his teachers learned to accept the reality that he would not be attending class on the day of the weekly livestock auction. He said he learned a heck of lot more at the sale barn than he did in class. He and his father worked side by side on the family farms for decades. His face lit up when he talked about being a farmer. His knowledge and experience with cattle was respected and sought out by many over the years.
On August 3, 1963 he married Myrtle Sykes in Summersville, MO. Together they worked to build a life and legacy for their family. They owned and operated Young’s Café for 30 years and have owned and operated Stop n Spot convenience store since 2000. There are dozens of people in the area who worked for them over the years who consider them a second set of parents. Dean loved to tell stories, laugh and visit. If he ever met a stranger that person did not feel like a stranger for long. He didn’t consider people customers, he considered them friends. It would be difficult to find anyone who has been around Summersville long who hasn’t had a laugh with Dean Young.
Dean loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and family over the years. His love of hunting and seeing the younger generations of his family sharing in that sport encouraged him to clear and build a family cabin on “the forty”. It was one of his favorite spots of all and he loved seeing his family spending time together there.
Of all the things he was known for, his hard work and love of his family was the greatest. He worked tirelessly at anything he set his hand to. He loved his kids and grandkids, nieces and nephews. He was always there for guidance and love but he also expected them to stand up for what’s right and work hard for what they want out of life.
On the day he received his diagnosis, he said in his “matter of fact” voice to the family with him, “I want to tell you all something and don’t ever forget it. None of us are going to live forever. I have lived a good life. I have hunted the mountains of Colorado and the hills of Missouri. I have fished the creeks and rivers. I have worked and farmed. I did it all exactly the way I wanted to do it. I’ve had good friends, good neighbors, and I have a good family. I’ve had a good life.”
Harold Dean departed this life on September 21, 2019 at his home surrounded by family and their love for him.

Wanda Mozell McKinney
Wanda Mozelle McKinney was born in Durant, OK, on December 23, 1924, to Birdie Sophina (Bohannon) Templeton and Charles Haskell Templeton. She lived in Durant, OK for the first 16 years of her life. Mozelle always fondly expressed how she never saw a town like Houston, as everyone was so friendly and welcomed her with open arms.Even on her first few days in town, she met some of her life-long friends and before she knew it she was down in the river swimming with them. They moved here between her junior and senior year in school. Mozelle graduated from Houston HS in 1942. She was very social, engaged in many school clubs and activities, including choir and glee club.
Carl Winfred McKinney and Mozelle eloped on July 26, 1942. That day, Wink and Mozelle were asked to be witnesses to their friends’ elopement in Arkansas. While there, Wink leaned over and asked Mozelle, “Do you want to get married too?” Obviously, she said yes. Larry was born nine months after they got married, and Mozelle was convinced they were going to have 12 kids.
However, they ended up with just three total beautiful children, Larry, Fred, and Amy. They lived in various places throughout their life together including; Houston, MO, Columbia, MO, Springfield, MO, Albuquerque, NM, Lebanon, TN, then back to Houston, MO, and they lived in seven different air force bases in a five-year time period, including Clovis, NM, Albuquerque, NM, and San Antonio, TX.
While in Lebanon, TN, as Wink was attending law school, Mozelle’s younger sister, JoAnn, came to stay with them for a little while and Wink introduced her to his best friend, Harry, whom she later married. Mozelle always said in later years, that she regretted not going to college but she feels like she earned her degree from supporting her husband further his education. Wink and Mozelle also loved to sightsee and learn about history by travelling to over 37 states, Canada and Mexico throughout their years together.
Mozelle worked for the Health Department for over a decade and then 35 years working at the Houston Post Office because she loved talking to people and was outgoing.
Mozelle was always active in her community and at the First Christian Church of Houston. She played bridge in many clubs throughout the years, winning high often. She was extremely active, winning dance contests with Wink in their early married years, and then later involved in dance ballroom, and attending many dances until just a couple of years ago. She was always very full of energy and walked three miles a day into her 70s, and then switched to low impact aerobics. She passed her love of games down to many family members. Friends and family would come over to play cards later into the evening. Mozelle’s other favorite games where dominos, Rumicube, bridge, skip-bo, and many card games. She was also an avid reader, often reading up to seven books a week, and loved movies. Mozelle’s favorite thing to do was to go shopping and never let a sale pass her by. But the one thing Mozelle, did not love was cooking and would take the family out to eat to avoid it at all costs. Although she always kept herself healthy, she had a wicked sweet tooth.
Mozelle died at Houston, MO September 14, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; and her son, Frederick Morris McKinney. She is survived by her son, Larry McKinney (Beverly); daughter, Amy Lee McKinney; sister, JoAnn McKinney; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jim was a Navy man for over 10 years, He met the love of his life, Debbie, while stationed at May Port Naval Base in Florida. Together they lived an adventurous Naval life, moving up and down the East Coast. In 1989 they decided to make Missouri their permanent home. Jim always had a passion for being on the water, whether it be on a naval boat, tow boat or fishing boat. He was excited when he started his new adventurous career on the riverboats. He was dedicated to his Job for over 22 years. Our life is filled with so many memories. Thinking back to raising our kids together, going camping together, school sports, fishing, hunting, and shooting guns, out trips to Florida and kids graduations from school. Then came along our grandsons, Gabe, River and Sawyer. They are the “apple of our eyes” and Jim always looked forward to going to pick them up for a visit. Mostly I will miss our late night talks in bed….
