In later years he was joined in marriage to Davette Weaver, and with this union Virgil gained an additional son, David.

Virgil was better known by the name of Tooter. Most people have no idea how he came to be known by this name. When Tooter was a small boy he ran everywhere he went and was always overheard saying “toot-toot” as he ran along. A family friend, by the name of Sister Johnson, overheard him coming through the house yelling toot-toot and said “there comes Tooter”, and the name stuck.

He also leaves to mourn, his companion Thunder, several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Virgil served four years in the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, and was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Virgil spent his early years of employment working in several different areas from helping his dad in the family lumber industry, and as a local truck driver, with the most memorable being the 37 years he spent employed by Junior E. DePriest Trucking Company. At which time, he was better known by his CB handle, Speedball. Upon retirement Virgil was acknowledged for the over 3 ½ million accident-free miles he had driven over the course of his career.

At an early age Virgil accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Later in life he rededicated his life and was an active member of the Church of God of Prophecy at Montier, Missouri. Virgil attended church faithfully until his health declined. He always arrived early for services to open the church doors and to greet his church family as they arrived.

Frances (Murfin) Campbell

Frances Eloise Campbell was born May 13, 1931 in Hartshorn, Missouri and passed away June 3, 2020 in Nampa, Idaho. She is preceded in death by her Husband Eldon. Left to mourn her passing are her three sons, Mark, who devoted his time to caring for Fran during the last years of her life, Barth and his partner Patti. Kirk, and his wife Virginia and Fran’s grandchildren, Clint and his wife Elsa, Brad and his wife Katie and their son Issac. And granddaughter Stephanie. Also left behind are Virginia's daughter Megan and grandson Payton whom Fran considered her grandson too. Her brother, Charles Murfin and his family of Ozark, Missouri.  Also Margaret Wilson and John Utter.

For many of these last years Fran struggled with health problems. But she was tough. Man was she tough. She went through surgery after surgery and just kept going. One time, several years ago, I took Fran to her doctor in San Francisco and went in with her and the doctor put up all her X-rays and I saw first-hand all the metal in her body. But she just kept going. Having said that, scripture tells us “It is appointed unto man once to die.” It’s going to happen to all of us. There comes a time when our bodies just will not support life anymore. When the struggle is too much.

I want to read from Proverbs 31:10-31, it’s a description of Fran.

From my personal knowledge there are some characteristics from that passage that emerged about Fran.

1. Loving wife-Fran and Eldon were married for 63 years. Today, with throw-away marriages, she was a faithful loving wife. What a great example. That doesn’t just happen. It takes work. It takes commitment. It takes strength. It takes humility.

2. Loving mother-Fran was loyal to her kids, and her grandkids. Her family was her favorite thing.

3. Caring person-None of you know the hours and hours I spent with Fran through the years as she talked about her kids or grandkids, or friends that had some need in their life. She was always trying to figure out ways that she could help.

4. She was a great homemaker-I was never in her home when it wasn’t neat and clean, she was the best home cook I have known. She used to tell me she was just an old country cook. But what a country cook she was.

5. She was successful in the workplace-You know why, because she was smart and she was a hard worker.

6. She was a spiritual person-a member of the Church of Christ for many, many years. She believed in God, She believed in Jesus Christ and she believed in the resurrection. Once she moved to Idaho I very seldom spoke to her on the phone that she wouldn’t ask how everyone in the Santa Rosa congregation was doing.

7. She was a busy person-Not an idle person. She lived a full life. Your mom never wanted to just sit and do nothing.

The last time I spoke with Fran she told me she wanted this song at her funeral. It was sung at Eldon’s funeral but because of the virus we couldn’t have singers today, but we have this recording she loved. Song: Peace in the Valley.

Mark: My mother, Frances Eloise Campbell was born May 13, 1931. She was the first child of Charles and Idola Murfin at Hartshorn, Missouri. With Sister Kay and brother Charles. She married my father Eldon Harley Campbell December of 1950. They moved from Houston, Missouri to Norfolk, Virginia Naval base where my father was stationed and working as a medic in the hospital. My mother worked at an up-scale clothing store in Norfolk. Their first child, Mark was born in August 1952 at the Naval Hospital. They returned to Houston, Missouri after the Navy and stayed for a couple of years before hearing about better opportunities in California.

Frances, Eldon and Mark started for California in September of 1955. All of their possessions were packed in the Hudson and a small u-haul trailer. Jay and Georgia Hale accompanied them to California. After arriving in Mill Valley, California with only $25.00 my mother borrowed money from her father to get one months rent and groceries for the five of us to stay in a small house on Pine Hill Road in Mill Valley. My mother worked on the house to make it better, booked for all five. My father and Jay looked for carpenter work which they found with the help of Uncle Clarence who lived on Marin Drive across the valley from Pine Hill Road.

We later moved to the Alto area of Mill Valley and stayed in the house of Edith Daily who was in Alaska with her husband.

Barth was born in September of 1956 while we lived at Alto.  When Barth was a year old we moved to Clarence’s house on Marin Drive in the summer of 1957 after Clarence completed his new house on Browning Street in Tam Valley. My mother continued helping Edith Daily after we moved from her house. Through the years that followed taking her to church at San Pablo until she died. A year after we moved to Marin Drive my mom insisted that they buy the house from Clarence. My dad said he didn’t have the money. My mom said yes we can. We will get two loans and pay them off. And that they did.

Barth enjoyed pushing dirt with his toy bulldozer. He played for hours using his dozer with his fingertips and making the appropriate sounds until his lips were sore.

Kirk was born July 1961. He was a wonderful young child. Through the following year my mom worked to improve the house to make it comfortable and spacious, with room for us to grow. She cooked, canned, cleaned, made shirts for us, patches jeans then she would go to her job at the restaurant. My father worked six days a week, my mother worked seven if you count Sunday lunch for church. It is true, A man works from sun to sun but a woman’s work is never done. She was the hardest working woman I ever knew by far. She always worked to help her family and others. No matter what the task ahead, the problems to be solved, my mother was  capable of saving the problem.

My mother faced numerous health problems during her life. She nearly died of aspiration at 43. Doctors told me she would not live much longer, a couple of hours at most. I told them she would live, don’t give up on her. They didn’t and she lived . In 2005 her heart rate was 32 bpm in the hospital, very weak. She recovered. Doctor told her he would see her in 6 months if she was alive. She lived on. Her health improved and after retiring she and my father enjoyed traveling to the midwest and buying antiques. Which she hoped to give to her grandchildren someday.

My mom enjoyed time spent with family and friends, cooking more than enough food for all. She was glad to have friends and family come to Idaho and Visit. Rodney, Herbert and Sandra, Ken and Evette, Margaret and Steve, Tom and Doricia, Clint and Elsa, Brad and Katie and Issac.

My parents were plain and hard working. They enjoyed going to church. My mom most wanted to attend church but was not able. The last few weeks she would ask me if it was the Lord’s Day. She got it right until the last couple of times. She always helped her children and grandchildren with support and understanding.

My mother was a good woman who did all the good she could give to friends and family. More good to more people than most will ever know including strangers. The vast majority returned her kindness and were thankful and grateful to know her.

These are words written by Charles.

She was born in a small cabin on Grandpa Murfin’s farm near Hartshorn MO.

She would go with Dad to the barn to milk cows and to the woods to cut logs to take to a mill for processing..  this mill was 25/30 miles away.. She was definitely a Daddy’s girl!!

She attended school in Hartshorn where DAD taught..

And then when on to Summersville (Mo) high school..

The family moved to Houston, Missouri her senior year in HS. After Graduation she attended Southwest Missouri State college in Springfield Missouri .

Receiving her Teachers Certificate.  She then taught in the one room schools surrounding the Houston area.

During the summers she would work at jobs in Houston.  She was working at The Rexall Drug Store when a young sailor came in by the name of Eldon Campbell.  AND she proceeded to dump his drink in his lap!!!  Needless to say that got his attention!!!  They were married in our home in Houston, Missouri while Eldon was home at Christmas time.  He was stationed in Norfolk Virginia and they lived in Portsmouth, Virginia . They came home the next year around deer season because Eldon loved to hunt. We had the largest snow while they were home - 36 inches ..Eldon was driving a Black Hudson Hornet car that he kept spotless !!! Needless to say it wasn’t too pretty when they left for Virginia..  While they were visiting, little brother came down with the mumps!!!  So when they got back to Va - Francis came down with the mumps .... BUT then their next visit they came home with a baby, Mark Harley born August 15, 1952.

After Eldon was discharged they moved back to Houston.. Francis started working for the family who had a small restaurant.

With her cooking ability the restaurant “boomed“. The mashed potatoes and gravy plus her Chili was a big HIT.

Their next move was to Mill Valley California.  Word had come back to them From Uncle Clarence that the “building boom“ was big in California. This then became their permanent address 723 Marin Drive..

On September 25, 1956 their second son Barth Charles was born!!  And Kirk Eldon was born July 13, 1961.

I spent several Months living in their Home where they both treated me like their own.

I have lots of wonderful memories of my oldest sister, Fran, who was often more like a second mom to me. One such memory was a whipping that she gave me, which was then followed up by a whipping from my Dad!  When we moved to Houston, Missouri, she was a senior in school and was always working different jobs.  She later met and married Eldon and moved to Mill Valley, California.  I enjoyed visiting her in Mill Valley and she always welcomed me.  I lived with her and Uncle Eldon one summer when Barth was a small boy.  I rode to work with Eldon and my lunch box was always full enough for two people (and Uncle Eldon had his own box)!  Once I remember her breaking her arm and it was set clear up to her shoulder, plus she got her left thumb caught in the car door.  But that Monday we came home from work to fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and biscuits.  She made it all with four fingers, including cutting up the chickens!   She was a very tough, hard-headed, hard-working lady.  Her joy was making big meals to feed her family and whoever happened to come visit.  In 1966, she and my other sister Kay organized and pulled off mine and Karen’s wedding.  All of my family has been blessed over the years to be guests in her home.  Randy and Chuck remember all the wonderful visits to Aunt Fran’s house, her wonderful meals and tubs of cookies for them to enjoy.

On our last visit as a family to her home, she spoiled my kids and grandkids with another one of her yummy feasts!  We will all miss her dearly.   We love ya Fran!

Fran believed in God. She believed in Heaven. And she believed she would again see Eldon. This last song expresses some of those thoughts.

Song: This World Is Not My Home.

Let’s close with a prayer.
